Peter Okoye, one-half of the popular Nigerian music duo PSquare, has revealed that he is not a fan of the legendary Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti.

In a recent interview, Okoye admitted that he knows Kuti well, but that he has never been a full-time Afrobeats artiste. Instead, he considers himself an R&B artist.

Okoye also revealed that he only started listening to Kuti’s music about 10 years ago, when he began to travel outside of Nigeria and became more aware of the world around him.

It was at that point that he realized that Kuti had been speaking the truth about social and political issues for years.

“I know him (Fela Anikulapo) but I wasn’t a fan. I know him very well, with all due respect, but I wasn’t a fan.

“Even till today, I am not a full-time Afrobeats artiste; I am an R&B artiste. I started listening to his music 10 years ago, not when I was 16, 17.

“That’s when I started getting enlightened about what is happening in the world. I started travelling out.

“I realized that I thought they said Nigerians are richer than these countries. Why are we not having good roads, good health systems?

“I started listening to the then I realized he has been speaking the truth right from time. Maybe people neglected it.”
