Barcelona have been dealt a major blow after young midfielder, Gavi sustained a serious injury in Spain’s 3-1 win over Georgia in a Euro 2024 qualifying match.

Barcelona, just like Real Madrid, have been hit with injury issues this season and Gavi’s potential absence for the rest of the season will be felt by coach, Xavi.

Gavi injured himself while trying to control the ball and lasted only 26 minutes on the pitch. Reports in Spain from major outlets have reported that the young midfielder has suffered a serious knee injury, per Mundo Deportivo.

Spain had already qualified for the tournament, but the win over Georgia means they will finish top of Group A above Scotland.

When his club teammate, Ferran Torres scored La Roja’s second of the night, he celebrated by holding up Gavi’s shirt.

“This is the ugly part of football. I am very sorry. Let’s wait for the tests to confirm the extent of the injury. This is the most bitter victory I have ever experienced in my life,” said Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente said after the match, via Reuters

Gavi remains an important player for both club and country. He has won 27 caps for Spain and made 11 appearances for Barcelona.

How long will Gavi be out for?

If he has suffered an ACL injury, he will need months to undergo rehabilitation, meaning he may miss Euro 2024. He joins Frenkie De Jong on the treatment table for the Catalans

The absence of the 2022 Kopa Trophy winner will definitely impact Barcelona’s title defence. Although facing serious financial issues, the club could go into the market in January to find a temporary replacement.

Gavi has played all but two of Barcelona’s 17 games in the 2023/24 season. The two he missed was because of suspension, per Transfermarkt.

The good news for Barcelona is Pedri just returned from injury and will be a welcome sight for Xavi.

Gavi clashes with Vinicius Jr.

Kimbiblog Sports previously reported on Gavi clashing with Vinicius Junior during El Clasico and a video showed that at a point during the match, the 23-year-old was seen slapping Gavi as play resumed.

Gavi responded by pushing the winger but both escaped punishment. In April, the pair were booked for an altercation. Gavi made an obscene gesture but Vinicius and Real Madrid had the last laugh
