2 months after joining Inter Miami, Lionel Messi wins new trophy for Inter Miami to become most decorated player in football history.
With the help of their star player, Lionel Messi, Inter Miami defeated Nashville SC on penalties and won their first-ever trophy as a club in the US in a 2023 Leagues Cup final befitting of the thrilling and exciting 2023 Leagues Cup campaign.
Nashville started the game on the front foot, applying constant pressure to Inter Miami, who struggled to maintain favorable possession control as a result. But Messi worked his magic once more in the 23rd minute. Walker Zimmerman was evaded as Messi grabbed hold of a loose ball and fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net.
As the second half got underway, Nashville began to exert more pressure. They finally got their reward for their efforts when Fafa Picault’s schoolyard goal bounced off Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender and into the goal.
Leonardo Campana was given a fantastic opportunity to win the match in the closing seconds, but his last-ditch effort to bury the shot hit the post. A penalty shootout had to be the final outcome for both teams.
Both goalkeepers went last in the penalty shootout, which included opportunities for all 11 players on each team to convert their kicks. Callender took the first step and launched his shot into the top of the frame. Elliot Panicco of Nashville had his attempt saved by Callender, making Miami the Leagues Cup champions.
Following the trophy presentation, Inter Miami co-owner and David Beckham, who couldn’t contain his joy, rushed to give Messi a hug.
Inter won its first trophy with the victory.
With 44 titles won between 2004 and 2023, Lionel Messi has now surpassed every other football player in history.
