Insane details of Eto’o’s mega Anzhi Makhachkala contract that made him highest paid played in history at the time ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo

In August 2011, Samuel Eto’o completed a shocking move to Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala from Inter Milan.

The Cameroonian international who was 30 years old at the time, was experiencing his prime years. He had just had one of his best ever seasons in his career. In the previous season, he had scored 21 goals in 35 Serie A appearances, 8 Goals in 10 Champions League appearances, 7 Goals in Italian Cup and Supercoppa Italiana and 1 goal in 2 appearances in the Club World Cup. He also registered 16 Assists in all competitions that season and also winning the Coppa Italia, Italian Super Cup and Club World Cup.

On the 23rd of August, Anzhi Makhachkala announced they have reached an agreement with Inter Milan the striker.

A statement on the Russian club’s official website read: “Today an agreement was reached between the football clubs, Anzhi and Inter, for the transfer of Samuel Eto’o.

“The terms of the transfer are completely agreed on both sides.”

The statement from Anzhi continued: “Anzhi expresses gratitude to the leadership of Inter Milan for their professional and constructive approach in the negotiations.

“Tomorrow the player will undergo a medical examination, following which the player will be awarded a three-year contract.

“On Thursday, Samuel will arrive at the location of his new team and will begin preparations for the match against FC Rostov.”

Samuel Eto’o’s contract with Anzhi Makhachkala in 2011 still remains unmatched by any Cameroonian till date. He earned an annual salary after tax of €20.8m(FCFA12.9 billion) and a weekly salary of €400,782(FCFA 259.3 Million). The highest-paid player at that time was Cristiano Ronaldo who earned an estimated 13 million Euros ($19 million).
